19. Il viale della Stazione
Throughout the 1800s great gaps began to appear in the massive wall surrounding the fortified town; the damage was done in the name of progress and was inevitable and irreversible. The changes that came about at that time, as Bellinzona entered the modern era, were mainly due to the construction of the St. Gotthard railway. In 1874 a huge tract of wall was demolished to make way for the high street, Viale della Stazione, between the vegetable gardens and vineyards of the ex Convent (still visible in the picture) and the old cemetery and down as far as Piazza Collegiata. The section of wall between the high street and the demolished Porta di Codeborgo suffered the same fate.
