17. Piazza Nosetto at the beginning of the 1900s
This is what the Town Hall looked like until 1924 when the decision was made to demolish it. In the meantime another storey had been added, as was the case for most of the houses in Piazza Nosetto. On the left you can see the wrought iron inn sign of the old Cervia hostelry.
For centuries Piazza Nosetto was a busy road junction. It was here, in fact, that north met south, both commercially and politically. The main street, then called Strada Francesca, branched off in three directions: westwards towards Porta Nuova and Locarno, northwards towards Porta Codeborgo and southwards to Porta Caminata. The square teemed with activities related to public life and trade; a kind of busy hub lined with arcades, shops, workshops, legal premises and inns, where all the activities were connected in some way with the town’s function as a crossroads between north and south.
