9. Access to the town from through north the Portone Tower

Passing through the Portone the traveller effectively entered Milanese territory. It was a major checkpoint and toll gate, in particular for salt and timber. The road which lead from the north to the gate corresponded to the present day Viale Portone. It was tree lined and flanked by an irrigation ditch which fed a tannery situated near the tower.
