7. Inside Porta Nuova
This is an imaginary view of the quarter inside the town walls that went from the gateway to Piazza Nosetto. Facing onto right hand side of the street, stood the houses of local notables and patrician families, with their large arched doorways. Some of these still bear historical and architectural traces of the period in the interior. The houses were in stone with tiny windows, from which all manner of detritus was thrown into the street creating a terrible stench and serious problems for public health and hygiene. With regard to this situation it is interesting to note the slight gradient of the rudimentary road surface, which allowed rain and storm water to wash everything down to the moat outside the town wall.
