3. Outside the walls: view from the south
From this perspective the two western gateways can be glimpsed. Porta Camminata, also known as Porta di Milano or Porta di Lugano, since it faces southwards, was also protected by a “rivellino”, a triangular shaped outwork with a moat, which shielded the entrance proper. Porta Nuova, known as Porta di Locarno because it faced in that direction, was equipped with a drawbridge only and was demolished in 1847.
