Prehistoric settlement
Evidence of continued human presence in the region of Bellinzona
as far back as the Neolithic period (4th millennium before Christ),
was found in burial sites and isolated remains of buildings. In the
urban area of Bellinzona, traces of prehistoric occupation were mainly
found on the rocky outcrop of Castelgrande, dating from the Neolithic,
Bronze and Iron Ages. Situated on the rock, the site was easy to
defend and therefore attracted artisans anxious to protect their
raw materials (quartz crystal, metals etc.) and artefacts from enemy
hands.
